Cycle du mercure en estuaire, baie de Seine et pays de Caux ArchiMer
Laurier, Fabien.
The Seine estuary and its adjacent region Pays de Caux are two significant sources of mercury for coastal marine environments. It is carried through fluvial means for the Seine bay and through karstic fresh water emergences for Pays de Caux's coastal area. Mercury cycle in the Seine estuary and bay is affected by additional anthropical activities. The estuary's maximal turbidity area acts like a trap and a chemical reactor for fluvial mercury. Within this area, we can confirm: (i) the non conservative behaviour of dissolved mercury; (ii) mercury enrichment of particles when comparing the Seine's and marine environment and we suggest mercury particle redistribution from the organic fraction to the oxyhydroxydes fraction. A large fraction of mercury is...

Detection and analysis of unusual events in long-term zooplankton and nekton data sets from North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA ArchiMer
Allen, Dm; Edwards, D; Feller, Rj; Hutchinson, Se; Ogburnmatthews, V.
Unusual events and disturbances are important sources of variability in ecological data sets, but methods for their detection and analysis are not readily available. We have adapted widely-used quality control methods to identify and quantify unusual events in ten-year-long data sets from the relatively pristine North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA.-Seasonal patterns and long-term trends were first removed from biweekly zooplankton and nekton abundance and corresponding water temperature and salinity data using nonparametic smoothing algorithms. The Shewhart Control Chart Method, a quantitative technique used for quality control in industrial manufacturing processes, was used to define four types of events according to intensity and duration....

Diel and seasonal changes in the macrozooplankton community of a tropical estuary in Northeastern Brazil Zoologia
Silva,Tâmara de Almeida e; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Schwamborn,Ralf; Gusmão,Lúcia Maria de Oliveira; Nascimento-Vieira,Dilma Aguiar do.
Studies were carried out to assess the macrozooplankton small-scale temporal and spatial variability at three stations in three hours intervals, during 24 hours in July 1996 (rainy season) and December 1996 (dry season). A plankton net 300µm mesh size was hauled at surface during three minutes. Water samples for salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH were taken simultaneously with the zooplankton samples. Sixty-five macrozooplankton taxa were registered. Copepoda constituted the most common taxon and comprised 58% of the total zooplankton counts. Brachyuran zoeae, cirripedian larvae, Larvacea (Oikopleura dioica Fol, 1872), and Gastropoda veligers were abundant at some tidal cycles, mainly during the night. Species diversity average was 2.0...

Diet of the chola guitarfish, Rhinobatos percellens (Rhinobatidae), in the Paranaguá Estuarine complex Anais da ABC (AABC)
Carmo,Wanessa P.D. do; Bornatowski,Hugo; Oliveira,Elton C.; Fávaro,Luís L..
The chola guitarfish, Rhinobatos percellens, is one of the most-captured batoids on the Brazilian coast, and an important predator of benthic community. Stomachs from R. percellens were sampled in the Paranaguá estuarine complex (March/2006 to March/2007 and October/2008 to September/2009). The stomachs obtained were used for describing the diet of R. percellens, and verifying if there are seasonal and ontogenetic differences in their feeding into the estuarine area. The general analysis showed a specialized diet with a predominance of three species in food contents: Leptochela serratorbita, Caridea remains and Ogyrides alphaerostris. Ontogenetic and seasonal analysis did not reveal significant differences in the food consumption. These data reveal that R....

Dry season distribution of hydroids in a small tropical estuary, Pernambuco, Brazil Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Maÿal, E.M..
Hydroid distribution patterns along a horizontal ecocline in the Rio Formoso/Rio Ariquindá/Rio Porto Alegre system, a small and seasonally poikilohaline estuary on the tropical northeast coast of Brazil, were investigated. Collecting was undertaken during the dry season, in November 1993, by diving (with and without SCUBA). Nine stations were sampled on a transect extending from a reef outside the river mouth to a mangrove system at the upper end of the estuary. Four major regions were distinguished along the ecocline based on numerical analyses of hydroid species/station location data: (1) nearshore reef — a sandstone ledge outside the entrance of the estuary; (2) river mouth — a sandy and shelly flood-tidal delta area inside the entrance of the Rio...

Dynamics of an estuarine ecosystem: Long-term trends in the macrobenthic communities of Chesapeake bay, (1985-1993) ArchiMer
Dauer, Dm.
Long-term trends in subtidal macrobenthic communities of the lower Chesapeake Bay, USA, were examined using data collected quarterly (March, June, September and December) fr om 1985 through 1993 at 16 stations along a salinity gradient from tidal freshwater regions of the major tributaries (James, York and Rappahannock rivers) to the polyhaline region of the mainstem of Chesapeake Bay. In March 1989 two stations were added to the program in the mesohaline region of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, a region characterized by contaminated sediments. A non-parametric trend analysis procedure was applied to five parameters characterizing macrobenthic community structure: community biomass, species richness, abundance of individuals, proportion of...

Dynamique sédimentaire et évolution holocène d'un système macrotidal semi-fermé : l'exemple de la rade de Brest ArchiMer
Gregoire, Gwendoline.
The bay of Brest is a tide-dominated, semi-enclosed coastal basin, which is connected with two rivers (Aulne and Elorn). Its jagged shoreline and seabed morphology constitute an ideal setting to understand sedimentary transfer at the land-sea interface. In this aim, this study is divided in two different time scale. The first (a) focuses on the present-day sedimentary bedload dynamic and the second (b) on the reconstruction of the Holocene infilling, during the last marine transgression. (a) A analyse combining a sedimentology approach and numerical has highlighted the major control of the tidal currents. Swells and rivers have a minor impact, because the inherited morphology accentuates and promotes tidal currents. There are responsible of a shelly sandy...

Ecomorphology and resource use by dominant species of tropical estuarine juvenile fishes Neotropical Ichthyology
Pessanha,André Luiz Machado; Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Oliveira,Ronnie Enderson M. C. C.; Silva,Adna Ferreira da; Sales,Natalice Santos.
Eleven ecomorphological attributes and diet of seventeen juvenile fish species were examined to test the hypothesis that morphological patterns determine resource uses in estuarine habitats. Species were separated according to the apparatus to food capture and habitat use (benthic or pelagic) in three different groups: (1) a group with depressed fish body, strong caudal peduncle and enlarged pectoral fins; (2) a second group laterally flattened with a wide protruding mouth, and (3) a third group strongly flattened with small pectorals fins. The following six trophic groups were organized based on prey categories: Zooplanktivores, Benthivores, Omnivores, Detritivores, Macrocarnivores and Insectivores. Significant results (PERMANOVA) between ecomorphological...

Effect of local hydroclimate on phytoplankton groups in the Charente estuary ArchiMer
Guesdon, Stephane; Stachowski-haberkorn, Sabine; Lambert, Christophe; Beker, Beatriz; Brach-papa, Christophe; Auger, Dominique; Bechemin, Christian.
This study aimed to describe seasonal variations of phytoplankton abundances in relation to the physical and chemical (nutrients and metals) environment under the influence of freshwater input in the Charente river estuary (Marennes-Oléron bay, France) over three years, from 2011 to 2014. Phytoplankton abundances were determined using microscopy and flow cytometry. Considering high frequency temperature and salinity data, breakpoints in each series led to the identification of two local hydroclimatic periods: the first (2011 and early 2012) being warmer and higher in salinity than the second (from spring 2012 to the beginning of 2014). A multiblock PLS analysis highlighted the significant contribution of the physical environment (temperature, salinity and...

Environmental factors affecting maerl bed structure in Brittany (France) ArchiMer
Dutertre, Mickael; Grall, Jacques; Ehrhold, Axel; Hamon, Dominique.
This study used a large spatial scale approach in order to better quantify the relationships between maerl bed structure and a selection of potentially forcing physical factors. Data on maerl bed structure and morpho-sedimentary characteristics were obtained from recent oceanographic surveys using underwater video recording and grab sampling. Considering the difficulties in carrying out real-time monitoring of highly variable hydrodynamic and physicochemical factors, these were generated by three-dimensional numerical models with high spatial and temporal resolution. The BIOENV procedure indicated that variation in the percentage cover of thalli can best be explained (correlation = 0.76) by a combination of annual mean salinity, annual mean nitrate...

Etat de la pollution par les hydrocarbures dans l'Aber Benoit ArchiMer
Allen, G.; D'Ozouville, Laurent; L'Yavanc, Jacky.
The Aber Benoît, a small estuary on the North West coast of Brittany was polluted by oil from the Amoco Cadiz oil spill. Preliminary results from water and sediment samples taken in the estuary in May 1978, show that two months after the initial spill, high concentrations of hydrocarbures existed in the water and sediments of the estuary. The Aber Benoît shows a well developed salt wedge and upstream increasing suspended sediment concentrations. Oil was dispersed more or less evenly throughout the water column, in the entire length of the estuary. In the bottom sediments, oil had accumulated to depths of 30 cm. Sand bars appear to induce a trapping of oil in the estuary channel.

Etude des apports en herbicides et en nutriments par la Charente : Modélisation de la dispersion de l'atrazine dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Munaron, Dominique.
Our study aims at making progress the estimate of herbicide and nutrient inputs to the Marennes-Oleron bay which could influence summer oysters mortalities, and to bring by modeling a better understanding of the dynamics of these compounds in the shellfish-farming area. The development of a strategy adapted to the Charente river and its estuary reveals that agricultural activity on the catchment area is omnipresent, as well on the level of the nitrogen and herbicides contributions. It is thus necessary to specify Charente fluxes, which is the main tributary of the Marennes-Oleron bay, in order to better characterize its impact on shellfishfarming activity. Use of a dispersion model will constitute an invaluable help in the risk assessment with respect to...

Étude par télédétection de la dispersion en mer des eaux estuariennes issues de la Gironde et du Pertuis de Maumusson ArchiMer
Castaing, P; Allen, Gp; Houdart, Michel; Moign, Y.
The objective of this study, carried out in the Gironde estuary inlet, was to determine the nature of the seaward dispersion of estuarine water and suspended sediments during a spring tide and high river flow. On June 3, 19(7, three flights were made over the inlet, at mid ebb, low tide and mid flood. The planned flight at high tide was cancelled due to adverse meteorological conditions. During each flight, thermal infrared coverage was obtained, together with black and white photographs. These data were correlated with concomitant ground mesures of current velocity, salinity, temperature and suspended sediment concentration Four types of water masses were identified during the tidal cycle: estuarine "very warm and turbid" water; estuarine "cooler and...

In order to establish the ecological status of water bodies, the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) is based on the evaluation of a number of biological quality elements, as well as physical parameters supporting the biology. In estuaries, phytoplankton monitoring was not considered relevant because of the high turbidity characterizing the large metropolitan estuaries and the French overseas departments (Guyana). In this work, we considered the possibility of using microphytobenthos (MPB) as a biological indicator of the ecological status of estuaries. This activity report summarizes the actions undertaken in 2017 under an AFB / Université de Nantes convention, which is structured around two main axes: the first axis is based on the analysis of the...

Evaluation of the Blue Crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 Bycatch in Artisanal Fisheries in Southern Brazil BABT
Ruas,Vinicius Mendes; Becker,Cintia; D’Incao,Fernando.
ABSTRACT We evaluated the incidental catch of the blue crab in artisanal fisheries through the analysis of sex ratio, catch per unit effort, net positioning, and size in which the capture probability was 50% (P50). The specimens were collected from 2011 to 2013 in the estuary of Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil. The analysis showed a higher occurrence of males. Variations in the catch per unit effort showed greatest abundance values close to the mouth of the estuary. Catch per unit effort was similar when comparing fishing seasons and net positions. P50 indicated a low selectivity of the nets since it varied between studied areas but stayed below the size at first maturity. Catches indicated a greater effort on males, since females migrated to spawn in the...

Evidence of habitat fragmentation affecting fish movement between the Patos and Mirim coastal lagoons in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Garcia,Alexandre M.; Vieira,João P.; Bemvenuti,Marlise A.; Marques,David M. L. Motta; Condini,Vinicius.
The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., mullets Mugil platanus, M. curema, silversides Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardine Brevoortia pectinata, and white croaker Micropogonias furnieri) were not captured above the dam. If these juvenile fishes could enter the Mirim...

Feeding ecology of juvenile dog snapper Lutjanus jocu (Bloch and Shneider, 1801) (Lutjanidae) in intertidal mangrove creeks in Curuçá estuary (Northern Brazil) BABT
Monteiro,Dijane Pantoja; Giarrizzo,Tommaso; Isaac,Victoria.
The diet and feeding ecology of juvenile dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu) were investigated in 92 specimens collected in four intertidal mangrove creeks of Curuçá estuary, Northern Brazil, between September 2003 and July 2004. No significant differences in total length were found between the sampling months. Feeding intensity was high as indicated by high stomach fullness index and low vacuity index. The most important prey was Penaeidae, followed by Grapsidae and Porcellanidae. The diet of juvenile dog snapper showed clear seasonal differences. Specimens from dry season (September and November) and dry / wet season transition (January), were specialists feeding exclusively on Penaeidae. However, the specimens from wet season (March and May) and wet /dry season...

First record of the invasive medusa Blackfordia virginica (Hydrozoa: Leptomedusae) in the Río de la Plata estuary, Argentina-Uruguay RChHN
GENZANO,GABRIEL; MIANZAN,HERMES; ACHA,EDUARDO M; GAITÁN,ESTEBAN.
Blackfordia virginica is a well-known invasive medusa inhabiting estuarine areas. It was recently detected in northern Argentina, constituting the first record of invasive hydromedusa for the Argentine Sea. In this work more than 1,500 plankton samples in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean (34-55º S) from 1983 to 2000 were analyzed. More than 5,000 specimens per sample of B. virginica were found in Río de la Plata estuary for the first time in February 2000. This river is one of the large waterways of South America with an intense nautical traffic and several exotic species has been recorded here, mainly due to trans-oceanic shipping traffic. It is important to point out that we found medusae of both sexes (therefore this species could be introduced in either...
